No one’s talking about this and for good reason, too:
- It’s boring
- It’s confusing
- It’s intimidating
- It *feels* unnecessary
What is this thing???
Website legal documents.
For majority of creators or website owners, you need two things: privacy policy and a terms of service. (To be very clear, I am not a lawyer and cannot provide you with explicit legal advice.)
1. Privacy Policy
If you collect any information about people visiting your website or subscribing to a newsletter, you are legally obligated in the US (and many other countries around the world) to have a privacy policy stating how this information is being utilized. Even if you have a Pinterest pixel, you need this!
This shows your audience you are taking the necessary steps to protect their information.
2. Terms of Service or Terms and Conditions
Most importantly, this provides your content protection from being copied.
Think of it as laying down the house rules before a big party. It's your way of saying, "Hey, we're thrilled to have you here, but here's how we roll." It sets the guidelines for using your website, defines what's acceptable behavior, and most importantly, it protects you legally.
Remember when you were a kid, and you'd build a fort and declare, "No adults allowed!"? Well, your ToS is a bit like that - it gives you the power to decide who can use your services and under what conditions.
Having these two documents is close to “set it and forget it”. You can add them to the footer of your website, any page you collect or track information of visitors and be generally protected.
Now, I'm not a lawyer, but a marketing strategist, so I'm not out here writing these documents for myself or anyone else - it's why I recommend using a service or professional that can easily do this for you. Let me know if you want my recommendations.
